Let The Pouring Begin: Spring Into Concrete Recycling!

Despite the recent dips into more typical spring temperatures, the concrete industry is already letting it pour! Perhaps you’ve seen highway or sidewalk construction in your travels. Perhaps you are contemplating a new concrete driveway pour this year. Did you know you could select recycled concrete aggregate as part of the Green Build program?

Each year, over 140 million tons of concrete are recycled in the United States. In the past, that vast volume would have ended up in landfills across the country. Aggregate base course, also known as road base, is by far the largest market for recycled concrete. Federal, state and county highway departments of transportation have made extensive use of this easiest and simplest use of recycled concrete. In another industry trend, concrete is increasingly used in new asphalt pavement as a substitute for virgin aggregate. This use requires more of the asphalt cement (binder), but may offset the cost of virgin aggregate sourced from quarries too far from job sites, especially when the cost of transportation fuel is factored in.

Charity, Recycling

I'll just keep my burger on a bun.

First there was hot dog stuffed crust pizza from Pizza Hut UK. Now, Pizza Hut Middle East is upping the ante with crusts made out of cheeseburgers or chicken strips. Clearly, Pizza Hut U.S. is getting the short end of the stick.

(I guess the US gets to wait on this offering. Hope it is a long wait.)

Where is the band-aid?

Reuters By Bruce Olson | Reuters – Mon, Apr 16, 2012

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) – Things have not been going all that well for Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich lately, even at one of his favorite places – the zoo.

Newt was nipped on the finger by a penguin during a private tour of the famous St. Louis zoo on Friday before he spoke to the National Rifle Association convention, zoo officials confirmed on Monday.

(At least he wasn’t prepared for the NRA meeting by having a gun!)

Having a bad day?

When I read the story about Newt I thought how sometimes no matter what we do it seems like everything is against us. Even our presense seems hidden or ignored (hence the hidden driveway reference.) I took this picture by my office

Lost Paths

and wondered about how it could say a lot more than a simple warning sign if we were to apply it to our situation. Often we seem out of touch and off the road of our life’s path. We even put out warning and need-help signs. I use the following to help  me get back on track.

How I try and get back on the path:

(1) Have hope, remember the positive motivations that drove you and seek to bring them back into your life.

(2) Seek Wisdom – vs. social norms/cultural trends. By this I mean is usually the normal and common is not what we need. Seek wisdom (one of my touch points addressed in a prior blog) to gain the understanding we truly need.

(3) Be Courageous – show courage – it is not why can’t but how can. Enough said except if you need to adopt the old adage, “fake it until you make it.”

(4) Exercise Self-discipline, in times of trouble and depression the weak parts of our character seem to reach out to us for control. Remember to discipline your self to be the better you that you know you are.

(5) Build Character – it is who we are in the dark – not reputation but the sum of our habits. This is where self-discipline becomes action. We analyze who we are and through the gift of choice, build a better person of character.

(6) DO SOMETHING! Fight through fear and adversity. This in many ways is the most important. When we have lost our way we have a tendency to stop. This is the opposite of what we need to do. Follow the steps and take action… Do Something. Don’t become a person of inaction, return to a person of action.

– A funny insight short quote.

WYROC Linking Charities“We are not perfect. The people around us are not perfect. People do things that annoy, disappoint, and anger. In this mortal life it will always be that way. Nevertheless, we must let go of our grievances. Part of the purpose of mortality is to learn how to let go of such things. That is the Lord’s way. Remember, heaven is filled with those who have this in common: They are forgiven. And they forgive.”

Andy Andrews' Book

  1. When I refuse to forgive, I create poison in my soul. The person who has offended me is free from the poison. The refusal to forgive is harming only me. Starting now, I do not poison myself.
  2. I do not wait for a person to ask for forgiveness because often they are unaware of the offense I am harboring against them. I free myself from the burden.
  3. As I forgive, I release myself from bonds and poisons and allow myself to move away from the past. I forge a bright new beginning.
  4. As I forgive, I create in myself a new heart free from poison and without the internally nurtured demons of selfish un-forgiveness.
  5. The words and deeds, whether intentional or un-intentional, of others will not find roots in my soul.
  6. My forgiveness will be free flowing without limitation or condition because I am walking a forward path without restricting tethers to the past.
  7. To live my life according to the opinions and actions of others is to live as a slave and have actions directed by others. Slavery is wrong. Scorn and criticism is often the price of moving beyond mediocrity.
  8. The darkest poison in me is my lack of forgiveness of myself. No more! I forgive myself.
  9. I forgive myself for my mistakes, excuses, disappointments, fears, delays and weaknesses. I move forward with purpose and without dragging those old burdens and embarrassments of my past.
  10. Not to forgive is to nurture invisible enemies in my head, an impossible battle to win. I forgive others and most of all myself. “I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men. And ye ought to say in your hearts—let God judge between me and thee, and reward thee according to thy deeds.” (D&C 64:8–11.)

Two brief facts on new trends, well inline with Linking Charities core values from this link: http://www.corporatephilanthropy.org/research/benchmarking-reports/giving-in-numbers.html

  • Employee and Stakeholder Engagement. The competition to attract and retain talented employees has encouraged many companies to offer innovative and meaningful employee-volunteer opportunities. Dollars for Doers, employee recognition awards, flexible scheduling, and paid-release time were programs most frequently offered.
  • Organization, Motivation, and Program Costs. Companies are increasingly targeting one or two societal issues rather than spreading funding widely across multiple program areas.

It is good to have confirmation that Linking Charities is in line with the trending changes.
